Building Water Confidence in Children Learning to swim is an essential life skill that every child should have. Not only does it provide them with a fun and enjoyable activity, but it also promotes water safety and builds their confidence in and around the water. In this blog post, I will discuss some tips and techniques to help parents and instructors in building water confidence in children. 1. Start Early: It's never too early to introduce your child to the water. Even infants can benefit from being in the water and getting used to the sensation. Start by taking your baby to a warm and shallow pool and let them splash and play in the water. This will help them become familiar with the water and develop a positive association with it. Even in the bathtub, any exposure to water helps them become comfortable. I also offer Parent Assisted swim lessons for parents and their infants, 6-23 months. 2. Create a Safe and Supportive Environment: When teaching children to swim, it's important to create a safe and supportive environment. For my swim lessons, I make sure the pool area is secure and free from any potential hazards. Use flotation devices or swim aids can provide extra support and reassurance to your child, but they can also create a false sense of security. Being confident and comfortable in the water without aides is very important as well. Swimming is a horizontal activity, floatation devices keep you in a vertical position, and can make learning to swim safely and independently more difficult and cause unnecessary stress. Having a knowledgeable and experienced instructor, like Miss Jesse, can also make a big difference in building water confidence. 3. Gradual Progression: Building water confidence is a gradual process. Start by introducing your child to the water in a controlled and comfortable manner. During my lessons, I start with simple activities like blowing bubbles, floating on their back and front, and kicking their legs. I make sure everyone gets their face wet during their first lesson, but if it is something that brings them stress and fear, we start with only twice (gotta get back on the horse, so to speak). It is impossible to tell someone, epsecially children, not to be afraid, you have to show them. Demonstrating that going underwater can be scary, but "nothing bad will happen" is essential for timid swimmers to become more comfortable. As each swimmer progresses, I then gradually introduce new skills and challenges. Make sure to celebrate their achievements and provide positive reinforcement along the way. 4. Personalized Attention: At Miss Jesse Swims, I believe in the power of personalized attention. Each child is unique and may have different fears or challenges when it comes to the water. I take the time to understand each child's needs and tailor my lesson approach accordingly.
